Two earthquakes occurred just one minute apart.
On Saturday night (January 25), a magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurred in Tainan at 7:49 p.m., followed by a magnitude 4.8 aftershock within just one minute, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
The first earthquake had its epicenter 43.7 km northeast of Tainan City Hall, with a focal depth of 7.7 km. The epicenter was determined to be in Dongshan District, Tainan.
The largest recorded tremor reached level 4 on the Taiwan earthquake intensity scale in the areas of Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Yunlin and Changhua. This scale consists of 7 levels, used to measure the level of vibration felt in each locality.
Immediately afterwards, at 7:50 p.m., a 4.8-magnitude aftershock occurred in the same Dongshan area, 42.6 km northeast of Tainan City Hall, with a focal depth of 6.8 km.
The area has been hit by a series of earthquakes in recent days. The most serious was a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Chiayi County on January 21, causing damage to buildings and roads in Chiayi and Tainan.
Authorities are monitoring the situation and advising people to be vigilant for possible aftershocks.
