The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) announced on Monday (June 24) a proposal to amend the third phase of its space program, which will include an additional NT$40 billion (US$1.2 billion) in funding.

In an interview with CNA, NSTC Minister Wu Cheng-wen (吳誠文) stated that the proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval before the end of this year. The Minister outlined the details of the space program, emphasizing Taiwan's robust capabilities in semiconductors, IT, and precision machinery as a solid foundation for developing the satellite industry.

According to Wu, to keep pace with the rapid commercialization of low Earth orbit satellites, the government plans to extend the third phase of the National Space Technology Development Program. This extension will lengthen the timeline from 2019-2028 to 2031, with an additional NT$40 billion in funding on top of the initial NT$25.1 billion.

Wu highlighted the importance of developing subsequent ground applications and devices, which are crucial for ensuring resilient communication and national security. Additionally, he stressed the need to secure communication networks in remote areas.

Regarding whether Taiwan will independently undertake a moon mission or train Taiwanese astronauts, Wu mentioned that the NSTC will evaluate plans based on Taiwan's scientific research and industrial needs.
